Building Places + Spaces for Everyone
Equity + Engagement
In order for Raleigh to thrive, we must build a community that creates places and spaces for everyone. Oaks and Spokes is committed to advocating for a transportation system that puts all people first, through providing access and opportunity to all road users. Learn more about some of our programming to help advance solutions in our community below.
Recycling Bikes for Those In Need
Raleigh Community Kickstand
Oaks and Spokes is the fiscal sponsor for Raleigh Community Kickstand (RCK), our local bike rehab experts that help to recycle bikes to rehome them for those that might need a new set of wheels. A fiscal sponsor is a nonprofit organization that provides financial oversight, and other administrative services to help build the capacity of smaller organizations without 5013C status.
Interested in volunteering? Send an email to raleighcommunitykickstand@gmail.com or learn more about their work or their website here.
Have an old bike you’re not riding anymore? Consider donating it to Raleigh Community Kickstand who will rehab it and get it to a person in need. They accept fully intact, repairable adult bicycles (24″ tires or larger). Their riders traverse a variety of terrains and prefer hybrid bikes or mountain bikes. We also accept components, tools, lights, locks, and pretty much anything else that is bike related. Email them to arrange donations at raleighcommunitykickstand@gmail.com.
A donation of $25 can help purchase a set of lights and a lock for new bike recipients.
Getting Kids Places, Safely
Safe Routes to School Wake County
Every child should be able to walk or bike to school safely and sustainably. We work closely with the Wake County Safe Routes to School program to identify how to serve our families trying to safely walk and bike to school. We also support family friendly activations like the annual Marbles Bike Rodeo and Traffic Garden installations, in partnership with the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department and others.
Oaks and Spokes advocates for an all ages and abilities transportation system that provides access for all. Thanks to Rootful Media for capturing the value of teaching children how to safely practice traffic safely on the road. The goal is to create a small world to enable children to develop a sense of traffic flow so they’re safer road users.
