June Advocacy Update

June Advocacy Update

At the June 4th advocacy meeting, there was a lot of time spent strategizing and brainstorming.

We thought about questions to ask city planners at the BRT open house, which the City hosted at the Convention Center on Thursday, June 6th. We are concerned about how Raleigh plans to fund the bike network improvements which have been planned to improve first/last mile mobility near BRT stations.

We also began to outline a statement to read to City Council during their June 18th public comment period regarding BRT-related bike infrastructure funding.

We thought about expanding our presence at CAC meetings, considering whether to ask area police to present about bike-related incidents at each CAC, to keep bike safety and multi-modal mobility on the minds of meeting attendees.

We continued our work towards building friendships and connections with other bike communities in Raleigh. Expanding our community will improve our advocacy work, because we’ll know more about what people on bikes in Raleigh want and need. We reached out on social media and with in-person meetings to get to know our neighbors at the Raleigh chapter of Black Girls Do Bike (BGDB) and we sent a little social media hello to the folks at Triangle Bikeworks.

Finally, we re-visited our Bike Buddies program. We hope to get this up and running again, to help new riders feel safe and confident on their bikes, and help folks find bike-able routes around their local neighborhoods.
