Building. Better. Places.
Pop-Up Bike Lanes
We believe that Raleigh deserves bike lanes that are safe for all ages and abilities, and that paint on the road is not protection. Our pop-up bike lanes allow our community to envision how we can adapt existing road space to make it better - one cone at a time. Learn about past and planned projects below:
May 2021
State Street Pop-Up
Oaks and Spokes piloted a temporary two-way protected bike lane on S. State Street. This project was possible through a partnership with The American Association of Retired Persons or AARP and the City of Raleigh. The temporary bike lane went along State Street from Peterson to Bunche Drive. It stayed up for one week to let the community test it out, and provide feedback. The results were some excitement, and some concerns. The concerns included the speed of traffic and trash dumping on State Street.
April 2019
Harrington Street Pop-Up
This community activation was our first pop-up bike lane and helped our community envision a new reality for our community. With cones, volunteers, and generous sponsors we transformed our community to make it people powered, by design.
Downtown's 1st Separated Bike Lane
North South Greenway Connector
Harrington and West Street are part of a combined effort to create a North/South Greenway Connector. This was the first separated bike infrastructure in Downtown Raleigh. Oaks and Spokes hosted a pop-up bike lane on Harrington Street in April 2019 to gauge the feasibility of the project and solicit input from stakeholders. The result of that public engagement is the North / South Greenway connector. During the pop-up, it was identified that there was insufficient space on Harrington and West to do a stand-alone two-way bike lane, so the project was split into a North (on West St) and South (on Harrington). The results are Phase I of the N/S Greenway Connector (split on Harrington and West). Oaks and Spokes was critical in moving this forward and an essential stakeholder that elevated the project and pushed for it's completion.
