Join Our Board of Directors:

Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Directors at Oaks and Spokes. Our board is made up of volunteers who share a common goal: creating a Raleigh where everyone can safely, easily, and affordably get around by bike, on foot, or through other active forms of transportation. Board members serve two-year terms and are nominated by current Board members and voted on by Oaks and Spokes membership annually in January.

 

We are always seeking new members to bring fresh energy and ideas to our organization. Experience in fundraising, communications, finance, human resources, community organizing, event coordination, transportation policy, or nonprofit management is valuable, but enthusiasm and a commitment to showing up is just as important!

 

We strongly welcome applications from people of color, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of all ages and abilities.

 

Board Member Duties and Expectations

 

  • Serve as part of the governing body responsible for managing the organization’s affairs and advancing its mission.
  • Act in the best interest of Oaks and Spokes, maintaining loyalty, transparency, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain current membership and live or work within the City of Raleigh.
  • Attend and actively participate in regular Board meetings and events.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any financial or organizational affiliations that could influence judgment.
  • Uphold fiscal responsibility by reviewing budgets, policies, and financial information as needed.
  • Serve without compensation, though reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.
  • Participate in committees or projects as assigned by the Board.
  • Support the hiring, oversight, and evaluation of the Executive Director.
  • Follow respectful meeting conduct and organizational policies.
  • Remain in good standing by fulfilling responsibilities and avoiding unexcused absences.
  • Serve a two-year term, with the option for re-election up to three consecutive terms.

About Oaks and Spokes:
Oaks and Spokes is a Raleigh-based nonprofit (501c3) dedicated to making biking and walking safe, accessible, and integral to everyday life. Through advocacy, education, and events, we foster a culture of safety, progress, knowledge, empowerment, and sustainability in our community.
 
Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and organized Program Manager to lead and grow our Safe Routes to School programming and related community initiatives. The Program Manager will coordinate hands-on education programs, community outreach, and events that empower people of all ages to ride confidently, advocate for safer streets, and engage in building a more people-focused Raleigh.
This hybrid/remote part-time position (20-25 hours a week) is based in Raleigh, NC. It requires some evening and weekend work, with the schedule averaging about half remote hours and half in-person hours.
We strongly encourage you to apply for this position even if you do not meet 100% of the below listed qualifications.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
– Manage and lead Safe Routes to School programs, including Learn to Ride sessions and pop-up traffic gardens, while advancing advocacy for permanent installations. (40% of time).

 

– Collaborate with schools, government partners, and community organizations to expand bicycle and pedestrian education for youth and adults (10% of time).
 
You’ll be great here if you can…
– Plan, coordinate, and support community programs, rides, events, and advocacy campaigns, including logistics, volunteers, and partnerships (20% of time).

 

– Provide leadership and instruction in bike education programs such as beginner riding, wayfinding, and basic maintenance and repair (mechanical skills a plus) (20% of time).

 

– Assist with active mobility advocacy at the local and regional level and maintain systems to track program outcomes, volunteers, and communications (10% of time).

 

 
Qualifications:
– Commitment to Oaks and Spokes’ mission of creating safer, more accessible streets, parks, and neighborhoods for people in Raleigh, NC. 

 

– Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.

 

– Experience with community programming, event planning, or education (preferably in youth, transportation, and/or health and wellness fields).

 

– Comfortable with public speaking and community engagement.

 

– Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with staff, volunteers, and community partners.

 

– Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.

 

– Basic knowledge of bike safety, road safety, bike maintenance, or advocacy is a plus.

 

– Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
 
Compensation:
This is a part-time position, 20-25 hours per week. Compensation is $25-$35 per hour, based on experience.
